Strauss Festival

Revelers Abound in 2008 Production

“Strauss Presents: Carnival in Venice”

Get set to be whisked away to a carnival at a piazza amid the watery streets of Venice

as you follow a couple entranced by the sights of dancers, jugglers, mimes, acrobats,

magicians, men on stilts — perhaps even a fire eater — during their romantic weeklong

journey to Italy. It’s all part of the 21st annual performance by the Strauss Festival of Elk

Grove, “Strauss Presents: Carnival in Venice,” scheduled for July 24-27 at Strauss Island

in Elk Grove Regional Park.

This year’s tale will be highlighted by a masquerade ball, which begins as the couple

return from their gondola ride. The lady, caught up in the carnival frenzy, loses her

husband in the excitement. Everyone is masked; where could her partner be? She finally

finds the matching mask and begins to kiss the man behind it — only to discover this

mystery man is not her husband at all! As she turns to run, she bumps into another man,

who immediately reveals that he is indeed her true love.

Joining in on the fun is the polka troupe, always a crowd-pleaser with their athleticism

and youthful charm, who burst onto the scene with a celebration of their own and arrive

later in beautiful harlequin outfits. The quadrille troupe, in sharp contrast to the

youngsters, enter the piazza in a stately manner, dancing with ribbons and weaving them

together for an ethereal effect. Children, too, are part of the celebration as they join with

the quadrille dancers on this joyous occasion.

The evening ends with “Blue Danube” as the Venetians arrive in exquisite gold

ensembles, revealing their pride in the heritage of the annual celebration of Carnevale di

Venezia — Carnival in Venice.

This year’s producer, Ray Bayles, finds much to be excited about as the festival

switches gears from last year’s production, “Dreaming in Three-Quarter Time.”

“We will have all new gowns for ‘Blue Danube’ — black and gold, all sequined. Those

dresses are just going to glitter out there,” says Bayles, who also dances in the show. “In

fact, every number is going to have different costumes. We’ve only done that once

before.”

Seven new dancers will also be making their debut following workshops and auditions

in October and November. Rehearsals are already under way to get the steps just right in

time for July’s performances.

“I’m enthusiastic about the show; it’s always exciting to have new dancers,” Bayles says.

“It’s going to be a beautiful production.”

Directions

Elk Grove is located on Highway 99 approximately 12 miles south of Sacramento, California. Take the Elk Grove Blvd. exit, and head east on Elk Grove Blvd. through town. Turn right at Elk Grove-Florin Road (the fourth stop light) and follow it to the park entrance.

Need more precise directions or prefer using a map? May we suggest Yahoo Maps for an electronic map and driving instructions.

Once you are inside the park, use this map to find Strauss Island.

Seating

Providing enough seating is a continuing challenge to the Strauss Board. The heaviest demand is Saturday night with attendance estimated as high as 10,000. The next busiest night is Friday, followed by Sunday and Thursday. Spectators sit on blankets and lawn chairs on the grassy knolls surrounding Strauss Island.

Seating is first-come, first-served. The prime viewing area is opened up at 10 a.m. daily. Attendees can reserve a spot in line as early as the night before, starting at the conclusion of the performance (about 10:15 p.m.).

Numbers are assigned to each blanket in the “lineup.” You need not stay with your blanket as long as you return by 10 a.m. Beginning promptly at 10 a.m. each morning the line moves into the seating area and you may place your blanket or chairs in the viewing area.

    Please observe:
  • Only one blanket per person is permitted for this first seating.
  • Plastic tarps are not allowed on the grass as they act like a lid and “cook” the lawn beneath.
  • All blankets must be removed from the viewing area each night following the performance to allow for park maintenance.
  • Tables and barbecues are not allowed within the viewing area.
Once you have found your viewing place, you can leave your blanket and return in time for your picnic supper and the show. Volunteers patrol the seating area to guard against blankets being moved, however, we caution you to use your judgment about leaving very valuable chairs unattended all day.

If you are unable to come to the park until later, very good seating is still available up till showtime across the lake–the reflection of the lights on the water makes these sites very lovely, and fewer people make a more relaxed atmosphere. Remember, wherever you are in the Park you will hear breathtakingly beautiful symphony music free of charge!

Reserved Seating

Reserved seating is available for the physically challenged. The handicapped person may be accompanied by one attendant. Ask parking attendants for directions for drop off and parking. If you would like to reserve handicapped seating, please phone (916) 684-7533, include your phone number, and we will get back to you.

Reserved seating is also available for our donors who provide us with annual support of $500 or more. If you are in this category, you will be contacted or you may call (916) 714-2527 to reserve your seats. If you would like to become a donor, visit our You Can Help page, or simply contact us at the address/phone below.

Food

We have partnered with several local food and beverage providers for your Festival dining and snacking.

Picnic baskets are welcome. Barbecue facilities are available in the Park. If you plan to bring your own barbecue, please place it outside the viewing area to allow for the safety of our large crowd.

Strauss Festival dancers begin rehearsals for July show

By Mary Lewis
Elk Grove Citizen Staff Writer
Although the Strauss Festival of Elk Grove’s annual show is four months away, dancers have been lined up and rehearsals have begun in earnest.
The Strauss board of directors hosted an orientation night for the cast Feb. 27, during which time directors, dancers and staff were able to meet each other. Also on hand, as they are at just about every Strauss function, were Festival founders Iris and Arnie Zimbelman.
Seasons of the Heart” is the title for this year’s show. It begins on an early spring afternoon when a rowboat docks at a tranquil island. Coming to the water’s edge are two ladies, one content and the other intent upon a match between her friend and the rowing gentleman. Introductions are made, and friends gather for a waltz.
Summer, and the couple fall in love, ending with a proposal of marriage. Autumn, and wedding vows are exchanged.
Winter is the climax to the romance with the signature Blue Danube waltz, always a favorite with festivalgoers.
This year’s waltz troupe consists of 24 dancers, nine of whom are new. There are 12 in the polka troupe including three new ones.
At the orientation, director Trayce Meany passed out rehearsal schedules, emphasizing that “even though we are all volunteers, we are considered a professional production with international appeal. Therefore, we need to be in that frame of mind, our behavior needs to reflect that.”

She again cited the need for rehearsal space, noting that schools are not as available as they have been in the past. And rehearsals cannot move to Strauss Island until May.
The public will be able to catch a glimpse of the dancers at a fundraiser, the annual Preview Night scheduled for Friday, June 23 at the Laguna Town Hall.

On this year’s production team along with Meany are producer Kass Bergmann, technical advisor David Link, choreographers Stan and Popi Rizzi-Dunn, Sheryl Draper, John Matthews, Jonathan Thurston and Meany, stage manager Jayson Smith, set construction Allard Parfitt, set decoration Ray Bayles, costume coordinator Frieda McKaughan, seamstresses Kirsti Cripe-Rauser, Susan Link, Leilani Love, McKaughan and Meany, and secretary Amira Judeh.
Volunteers are always welcome, and should call the Strauss message line at 714-2527.
